Class for Parents

If you have minor children together, the court will not grant your divorce until each of the parents has attended a one-night, 4-hour parenting class called Parents, Children and Divorce. This course fulfills the requirements of the administrative order for Parent Education and Family Stabilization Course as required in the 20th Judicial Circuit: Section 61.21, Florida Statutes..

The class is offered several times per week in a variety of locations in Lee, Collier and Charlotte Counties. You only have to attend one time, but both parents must attend and receive certificates of completion before the Court will grant your divorce. The cost is $35 and includes a workbook. If you have a case number, have it available when registering.

The class is also offered online for a fee of $39. For more information about the online class go to: www.onlinedivorceprogram.com. But, check with your court first! Some courts and judicial circuits do not accept a Certificate of Completion from a class taken on the Internet. Ask your legal advisor to check with the court or judicial circuit where your divorce is filed to see if the court will accept an online course.

Note:

• A picture ID is required at check-in. Check-in begins 15 minutes prior to class time.
• Do not arrive late. Students who arrive late will not be admitted.
• Attendance is required of each parent or guardian. Parents may attend together if they both agree. However, each person must call in to register for him or herself.
• Stepparents, grandparents and significant others are encouraged to register and attend the class at a reduced fee of $20.
• Do not bring children to this class. No exceptions.

Sandcastles

There is also a group-style companion program for children from ages 6 to 17. It aims at helping them cope with divorce or separation through sharing and listening to other children in their age group. This course fulfills the requirements of the administrative order of the 20th Judicial Circuit.

Age-appropriate groups help children see that they are not alone and that their thoughts and feelings are similar to many others who are experiencing divorce. Leaders are trained to facilitate innovative group activities that help the children discuss and focus on their feelings.

Preregistration is required. The fee is $25 per child and includes a workbook, all materials and a snack. The program is three hours in length. Payment is taken via credit card up to one business day prior to class. At the door, cash payment only is accepted. To register call 693-8893 or 800 767-8193.

Parents, please note:

• Check-in begins 15 minutes prior to class.
• Parents must bring child onto the site to fill out paperwork.
• Students who arrive late will not be admitted.
• The parent who drops off the child must be the parent who picks up the child.
• Your child must attend the entire class to receive the Certificate of Completion.
• Total class time is three hours.
• Parents may not attend the first 2 1/2 hours of the class.
• The parent who brings the child to the session needs to participate in the last 30 minutes of the program.
• If parent relations are not amicable, please have only one parent attend.
